Throughout the book and film we see Charlie struggling with drugs and alcohol and also trying to find a way to be happy again. In the movie Charlie tries so hard but fails over and over again. He tells his dad that he wants to go back to school but dad thinks he is being lazy and not trying hard enough.

Charlie goes on a walk with his friend Patrick who takes him to this big rock called "The Perks of Being a Wallflower" where they talk about their lives and how they have failed at getting back on track or finding a way to live a better life for themselves after going through so many bad things in their lives. Patrick tells Charlie that he should have been more open with his parents when he was younger because they would have tried harder to help him out instead of letting him make all those mistakes and hurting himself as much as he did. At the end of the movie we see Charlie running down this field towards his parents house where his dad is waiting for him with something special for him to open-a letter from his mom who has passed away! Charlie can’t stop crying as he reads his mom’s letter telling him how much she has missed him and how proud she was of all that he has accomplished since she left this world! This whole section really makes me think about what true happiness really is! As we grow up we tend to start focusing on ourselves instead of others and think only about ourselves whether we are happy or not! But sometimes you need someone else who can bring you up high off the ground so you can look down at yourself and realize how great you are!
